Hiroshima Peace Park - Atom Bomb Dome

This is the Atom Bomb Dome in the Hiroshima Peace Park.

The building is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was left as a permanent reminder of the horror of atomic war to promote world peace.
The building was an industrial exhibtion centre that was almost directly beneath the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that exploded 600 metres above the gorund on August 6, 1945. Everyone in the building was killed instantly.
It's such a powerful symbol, and almost incomprehnsible to be standing at the centre of the site where thousands of people lost their lives in less than a second, and many died in the minutes hours and days following - more than 270,000 from one bomb.
From the moment you enter the park - which is incredibly beautiful - I personally felt quite disturbed all afternoon. I was like so many others there, just quietly emjoying glorious sunshine, while quietly snivelling and wiping away tears of utter sadness.
