Walking in Kyoto

This is the lovely Mia from WaiRaiDo Guide Networks who took us on a walk around the Kyoto Geiko Areas. Geiko is the preferred term in Kyoto, but Geisha is OK in Tokyo FYI!
Mia was fantastic, bringing to life the history of the Geiko tradition for outsiders. As well as talking about the process of becoming a Geiko, she made the very interesting distinction between 'outsider' and 'foreigner'.
Mia said that the Geiko/Geisha culture was equally mysterious to Japanese people as nonJapanese people.
She also made the point of how tourism in the whole of Japan has suffered since the tsunami and Fukushima disaster, despite the fact that the rest of the country has has no significant radiation exposures. Even when I told people I was coming here, they would ask 'But what about the radiation?'. I get so cross, as people are just pandering to irrational fears and seem to forget the losses from the deaths of 20,000 people and a country trying to recover.
So don't stress - come here and visit - it's fine and it's awesome.
