I sat next to this very strange man who when ever he didn't want to do something, just pointed at his ears saying 'deaf'. He must have seen me emailing in the plane on the Blackberry in Gaelic, and all of a sudden started up a conversation with me. He was an academic historian and a Russian Orthodox chaplain in Hobart who did speak Russian. Go figure.
He was a large man and poked his elbows consistently into me for about ten hours, and as he sat in the middle of three, took up half the space on both adjacent (occupied) seats.
Anyhow, I think he got jealous when the Emirates staff brought me a birthday cake (chocolate mud cake), as I was travelling on my birthday.
Earlier in the evening, I had spent time chatting to the lovely Emirates staff, and when they gave me the birthday cake, I said that I'd take it with me and share it with a family in Glasgow (watch out RA and C) they piled in a heap of chocolates into the bag, so I think it's now ACNESVILLE, USA; POPULATION RONALD.
Anyhow, about 3 hours before the flight ended, I was called to attend to a sick woman. She had a headache, and I'm pretty sure it was a severe migraine but she needed a CT head scan to exclude a cerebral bleed, so I got shifted with her to first class, but I was working all the time - no time to enjoy.
So, after I shifted her and got her settled in first class, I dashed back to my seat to get my cabin luggage to move it to first class, and the bolshy combination non-Russian speaking Russian orthodox chaplain and Art Historian wouldn't budge an inch (I was in the window seat.
I explained that I had to shift my stuff to medically attend to an emergency and he said 'you'll have to wait until this movie ends before I shift' I said that I had to return immediately and it would only take 30 seconds, but he wouldn't budge!
The women in the aisle seat next to him, who was lovely, couldn't believe the grumpy old man, and said ' I'll shift and just reach over for you stuff', which I did. So this guy didn't care that someone was ill.
I think he was pissed off that I got moved to first class, but I wasn't having a holiday...
At Dubai, the ambulance came and I handed her over to the very nice ambos but then had to wait until everyone was off the plane to get my viola from the galley. I ended up just making my Glasgow connection.
Hence the take five pic..!
